Physical Education

At Witnesham Primary School we have long recognised the contribution of PE to the health and wellbeing of our children. We also acknowledge that a broad, balanced, high quality curriculum and extra-curricular activities have a positive impact on concentration, attitude and achievement. We support the government’s initiative to combat obesity and enjoy being active.

We make sure that pupils have at least two hours of PE timetabled per week, through which we develop the six areas of activity as set out in the National Curriculum – Dance; Games; Gymnastics; Athletics; Outdoor and Adventurous activities; Swimming.

Our school vision is to create a curriculum that develops, motivates and enthuses every individual child to become a lifelong learner. We aim to give opportunities for all pupils to develop their leadership, coaching and officiating skills. As a school we want to create a buzz about physical activities where every child feels confident and ready to participate.

Children in classes 3 and 4 attend Fore Street Swimming Baths in Ipswich for a whole term of weekly swimming lessons. A high percentage of our children meet the basic swimming requirement (25metres) by the time they leave and most achieve significantly in excess of this. Pupils in years 5 have the opportunity to complete the National Cycling Proficiency scheme which a number of our parents and governors kindly help with.

Our children have the opportunity to take part in local sports tournaments with other schools which include basketball, tag rugby, high 5's, football, athletics and quicksticks; most of which we do very well in! The school has an extensive range of resources and the children enjoy the use of the playground area and our very own large field on site.

Sport Premium

From September 2013 every primary school in England received £8000 plus an extra £5 per child Sport Premium each year and will hopefully continue to do so up until 2020. The funding for Year 2016-17 is approximately £8360.  This funding is to be used for schools to provide, develop and deliver sustainable high quantlity teaching in school physical education and sport. At Witnesham we aim to create a culture that encourages ALL children to be active and enjoy sport and help foster aspirations of future Olympians and Paralympians. Further information on how we intend to use this premium is shown in the document below.
